Sam the Speech Man!

Senior Sam Seering is recognized for his dedictation to the Duluth Speech Team.

“During the 2008 presidential primaries, I remember I had a lot of debates with Gretel Lee and Max Hansen during our APUSH class,” said senior Sam Seering. “Those debates in history class really got me interested in expressing myself more and joining the speech team.”

Sam found his love for speech last year as a junior when he first joined the Duluth Speech Team. His first year on the team Sam started off in the category of humor, but soon moved to the discussion category as it was better tailored to his strengths and preferred style of speech. At the end of last year Sam competed in sectionals for speech where he placed third, and honored the team by advancing to the State Speech Tournament.

This year Sam has high hopes for himself and the entire speech team.

“The competition in several categories this year is wide open and we have a lot of great new additions to the team this year, so we should be able to do pretty well,” said Sam.

Senior Ryan Gallagher said, “He’s [Sam] a great competitor, and I just know he’s going to be very successful this year.”

In alignment with his involvement in the Duluth Speech Team, Sam is also a part of Student Congress- a mock congress of students that give speeches and debate over various legislative issues.

After high school Sam is looking to attend The University of Minnesota Twin Cities where he hopes to major in political science.

“After college I want to run for some governmental position. A local office and then who knows maybe a national office,” said Sam.

Although Sam has much of his post secondary education bolted down and in order, there is still one thing that is uncertain about Sam’s future- how far will he take the Duluth Speech Team this year?
