Academic Lunch for the Whole Bunch?
Some students received a celebratory lunch for their academic achievements, but what about the others?By: Bauer LeSavage , East High School
On November 9, some students got ready for their lunch downstairs in the cafeteria where they eat everyday, over and over again. Others got treated to a nice lunch in the teacher’s lounge consisting of pizza and refreshments. Now what would separate these students from the others who must once again congregate in the cafeteria? The answer: Academics.
The students with an average GPA of 3.8 and up from the previous year, were invited by invitation and welcomed by staff members to the Academic Luncheon. The purpose for this meeting was to honor and congratulate the students who have worked very hard to achieve a high GPA. At this lunch, the administration also gave out the academic letters for the 2008-2009 school year.
There was music provided by two different performers throughout the school, including the Sterling Strings Orchestra and seniors Eva Reistad and Grace Richie signing and playing the guitar.
“I really liked having the music there, and the cupcake decorations were a nice touch,” said attendee and junior Erin Hill. These sort of thoughts were the reviews for most of the students who were able to attend to the celebration.
On the flip side, I can’t help but wonder, what were the thoughts of the rest of our students who hadn’t received an invitation to attend. Most students, whether they academically letter or not, work hard and diligently to receive the grades that they do.
Although some see this as a celebration, it must be looked at from the other point of view to truly see what everyone’s thoughts on the matter are.
Although the point may have been to entertain, congratulate and enjoy, some students may have not seen it as necessary to only congratulate students who maintained a 3.8 GPA because there are a lot of other students who try their hardest to succeed but don’t achieve a 3.8 GPA.
Even though the lunch was a success and performed what it was meant to, maybe next year students will bring new light to the conversation and ask the administration to host an all-school academic lunch, encouraging kids to do their best.
All in all, the students who attended had a great time and were honored for their classroom achievements. “I felt so appreciated,” said Hill.
