Stuff We Like: Hungry? Stuck home in your PJs? T-Bonz to the rescue
T-Bonz's bar food is an amazing elixir and capable of satiating the deepest of cravings. There are a ton of options to choose from: burgers, pizzas (the taco pizza is wicked), and an array of appetizers last seen at a Super Bowl party.By: Christa Lawler, Duluth News Tribune
It’s rare that I will concede that a good idea came out of Rochester, Minn., so this is a big moment. When I was living in that sleepy pseudo-suburb in the late 1990s, post-college, there was a cooperative between a certain cab company and a few dozen local restaurants. The cab company printed up a booklet filled with menus, a much more inclusive list than you could find in the red-tabbed pages of the phone book. And remember, this was before menus were available online.
You could call in your order from one of these restaurants to the cab company, which would then fax the order to the restaurant. A driver would pick up the food and deliver it to your living room for a small fee.
This gave a delivery option to tons of restaurants that didn’t have the means to do home deliveries. And it gave all of Rochester the option to get food from almost anywhere in town, and enjoy it while wearing pajamas and a scrunchie. Major metro areas offer this kind of service, and more. But considering most gas stations in Rochester close soon after prime-time TV ends, this was extraordinary.
Food delivery in Duluth is pretty frustrating. Granted, I am also overcome with bouts of laziness so severe that I resent the pizza delivery dude because he won’t just let himself in, set the pie on our coffee table, remove the dinero and an appropriate tip from my purse, then show himself to the door.
My list of grievances:
But! T-Bonz, I recently learned, will deliver almost anywhere and they will do so until midnight. Cha-ching.
I’m not going to claim that T-Bonz is the kind of place that uses fancy-schmancy ingredients, or that its recipes are dotted with sophisticated culinary lingo. It is bar food. But as you know, bar food is, above all else, an amazing elixir and capable of satiating the deepest of cravings. There are a ton of options to choose from: burgers, pizzas (the taco pizza is wicked), and an array of appetizers last seen at a Super Bowl party.
T-Bonz doesn’t have a menu online, so I had to wing it.
I ordered a bacon cheeseburger, which came with fries and a small container of cole slaw. It is easy to judge the quality of a food delivery based on the integrity of the French fries. Mine were still warm, thick cuts of potato, without even a hint of sogginess. The burger was a manageable-sized patty, served on a nice roll with perfectly cooked bacon and a moderate amount of cheese. Pickles on the side.
Of course, this order also came with a takeout menu for future reference, which I examined, playing a game called “What will I order next time?”
Kudos, T-Bonz. You just earned yourself a spot on speed dial.
