The city council will vote Monday whether to approve five members selected to be on a task force set up to study whether the Duluth Fire Department should take over ambulance services.

Three councilors narrowed down the applicants from 17 Monday night after interviewing each during a committee meeting. Jeff Anderson, who helped select the candidates and proposed the study, said the committee was looking for candidates who were for and against the takeover of ambulance services, as well as people with years of experience in the health care field or politics.

The candidates are:

  • Theresa Gunnarson, physician and section chair of emergency services at SMDC

  • Jo Ann Hoag, vice president and chief nursing officer at St. Luke’s

  • Patrick Lee, executive director of the Arrowhead Emergency Medical Service Association

  • Roger Reinert, state representative and teacher at Lake Superior College

  • Jay Sparks, retired firefighter and paramedic with the city of Duluth and past fire union president

Anderson said while it was suggested to have city staff on the task force, the committee opted to have them provide testimony and information to the group.

If the task force members are approved, councilor Jay Fosle said he expected it take at least 90 days for the group to issue a report.
