Sunday, Nov. 8

UMD’s concert band and symphonic wind ensemble will perform at 3 p.m. at the school’s Weber Music Hall. Cost is $8 for adults, $7 for seniors, $5 for students and $3 for UMD students.

Monday, Nov. 9

Vocalist Jeanette Thompson, a guest artist from the Izmir State Conservatory in Turkey, will perform at 7:30 p.m. at UMD’s Weber Music Hall. Cost is $19 for adults, $17 for seniors and $5 for students; call 726-8877 for tickets.

The Monday Adult Skaters (Ladies Recreational Club) have an open skate in the DECC arena from 11 a.m. to noon. Price is $3 per session and parking passes for the season (which runs through March) are available for $5. Sessions open to all adult skaters. Call 724-2285 for more. Bring your own skates.

Tuesday, Nov. 10

UMD will hold a nightwalk for campus safety from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Meet inside the Kirby Student Center bus hub to participate.

Singles Activities Group, for people 45 and older, will meet for coffee and conversation from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Papa Don’s in Superior’s Androy Hotel, 1213 Tower Ave. Call 722-6828.

The documentary “Coal Country” will be screened for free at 7 p.m. at Teatro Zuccone. Donations welcome.

The Maxi Childs Trio performs at 7 p.m. every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at Black Water Lounge, 231 E. Superior St.

The Proctor Community Band will present its annual Fall Concert at 7:30 p.m. at the Proctor High School Auditorium. Free admission.

Wednesday, Nov. 11

The annual Veterans’ Day March will begin at 9:30 a.m. at Armory on London Road and will end at the Depot. At 11 a.m. at the Depot Mayor Don Ness and Michael Lebsack, commander of the Coast Guard, will speak. This reception is open to the general public. Thomas Hanson, a former U.S. Foreign Service officer, will lecture on Obama’s foreign policy at 7 p.m. at the UMD Library. Free.

UMD biology professor Dr. Matthew T. Andrews will present “Hibernation: Lessons We Can Learn from Golden Gophers” at 7 p.m. at Hartley Nature Center. Free.

UMD’s College Republicans will host a GOP gubernatorial forum at 6:30 p.m. at the school’s Kirby Student Center lounge. Candidates Pat Anderson, Tom Emmer, Bill Haas, David Hann, Mike Jungbauer, Leslie Davis and Phil Herwig will be attending.

Duluth Parks and Recreation is offering free fall skating every Wednesday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Heritage Sports Center, 120 S. 30th Ave. W. These sessions are free and open to all ages for pleasure skating. Some skates available to borrow.

Thursday, Nov. 12

UMD graduate fellow Kelly Wendt will present “Monster in the Lake: A Brazilian Odyssey” at noon at the UMD Library. Free.

UMD will present “A Look in the Mirror: The Memoir of a Deaf Performer,” written and performed by Nic Zapko, for free at 7 p.m. at the school’s Bohannon Hall 90.

The 10th annual Story Hour concert, featuring UMD’s Symphony Orchestra, will be held at 7:30 p.m. at the school’s Weber Music Hall. Cost is $8 for adults, $7 for students, $5 for UMD students, $3 for children and free for those 12 and younger.

Beatrice Ojakangas will sign copies of her new cookbook, “Petite Sweets,” from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Fairlawn Mansion in Superior. Free to attend and enjoy complimentary miniature desserts prepared by the author and her friends.

Exhibits

Painter David Grote’s “A Rural Northern Life” exhibit will be on display through Nov. 27 at North End Arts Gallery, 1323 Broadway in Superior. It opens Monday.

“Victory,” new work by Aaron McLeod, will be on display through Nov. 29 at the Duluth Art Institute’s George Morrison Gallery (in the Depot). Also through Nov. 29: “The Modern Primitive,” new work by Gary Swanson, will be on display in the Depot at the DAI’s John Steffl Gallery.

“Natural World Observed 2009,” which documents every region of the country, will be on display through Dec. 20 at UMD’s Tweed Museum of Art. Free and open to the public.

An exhibit featuring work from UMD faculty will be on display through Jan. 10, 2010, at the university’s Tweed Museum of Art.

Nancy Stone is showing original oil paintings through Sept. 30 at Moxie Hollow, 323 E. Superior St.
