FAA revokes licenses of wayward Northwest pilots

The Federal Aviation Administration has revoked the licenses of two Northwest Airlines pilots who overflew Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport last week, the agency said.

The Federal Aviation Administration has revoked the licenses of two Northwest Airlines pilots who overflew Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport last week while reportedly on their laptops, the agency said Tuesday.

The Flight 188 pilots were out of contact with air traffic controllers for an extended period of time on the flight from San Diego, the agency said. Air traffic controllers and airline officials repeatedly tried to reach them through radio and data contact, without success.

The pair told investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board that they were working on their laptop computers.

The FAA is allowed to revoke the licenses as an emergency action for violations of agency rules, including failure to comply with air traffic control instructions and operating carelessly and recklessly.

The revocations are effective immediately, the agency said. The pilots have 10 days to appeal the emergency revocations to the National Transportation Safety Board.
