The Cost of Looking Like a Greyhound
East Apparel costs more than people think.By: Julia Klein , East High School
Embroidered in silver, on a red sweatshirt, a big greyhound on the back, and a quarter zip on the front. This could be a design for just one of the many clubs or sports teams here at East. To show enthusiasm and pride in their activities, East students create and purchase apparel pertaining to that sport, club, or activity.
When at East, a passionate and prideful student will collect many items of clothing over their four years here. Nevertheless, that passionate student’s bank account may not be chanting “East High, R-A-H, R-A-H, R-A-H”. The cost of looking like a true Greyhound can set someone back, but that doesn’t stop a plentiful amount of students looking their best in the current school years trendiest apparel.
Just because students are not involved in athletics doesn’t mean they won’t rack up Greyhound “loot”. Joining a club or activity can still make a student’s dresser drawers busting at the seams. There are over 15 clubs at East High School, that usually all design some sort of apparel.
German classes, Choirs, Bands, and Orchestras all make apparel pertaining to their specific class. This year, choir sweatshirts in Women’s Select, will cost 37 dollars. Speech Team is purchasing sweatshirts that cost 25 dollars.
“Warm-ups and sweatshirts are worth the price. You get to represent East, and it has your last name on it,” said sophomore soccer player Ben Gilbertson.
Sports teams at East regularly design apparel for each season. The task of creating a new and fresh design that a whole sports program will like, is a daunting task that may seem impossible. This monstrous task is left upon the captains of the varsity team. Sweatshirts, sweatpants, t-shirts, long sleeve t-shirts and shorts are all options to choose from. Popular colors for the apparel are black, white, red, or grey. However, certain programs deviate from the norm, and go with purple, green, blue, or any color they choose.
“We can get different packages for football, like the spirit pack,” said sophomore Leo Spott. The prices of apparel are very high. Football cost 76 dollars, for both a sweatshirt and sweatpants. This year volleyball apparel was 74 dollars for a sweatshirt and sweatpants. Tennis was 133 dollars, for warm-ups and a sweatshirt. Swimming Captains, this year created sweatshirts and red sweatpants that cost around 80 dollars.
Last year, Basketball’s captains made sweatshirts that cost around 30 dollars. Usually teams get group discounts for making such large orders. Arguably the most expensive apparel comes from the soccer team. This year, the soccer team purchased sweatshirts, sweatpants, and shorts. Each team member paid 98 dollars. This was even after the discount.
“For basketball, we sold raffle tickets to purchase our sweatshirts,” said Sophomore Tyshawn Hubbard. Some teams chose to fundraise or use alternative methods in purchasing apparel. Usually, Students and their parents will purchase the items.
Some students that aren’t in sports or clubs can still get East apparel. Sometimes certain classes will create apparel to remember their spectacular year, or students who aren’t involved in any activities that design clothing, can purchase it on annual events. Homecoming is a time when a student can by a t-shirt, a bandana, a hat, and beads. Red and Grey is another spirit week at East that allows each student to receive a free t-shirt. Also, when an East sport team does well, the school will often sell shirts in support. If a team goes to state or a section final, apparel will be sold. T-shirts sold school wide cost ten dollars.
Sporting the latest Greyhound designs is a choice many students make. The choice may put them back a few dollars. The cost of dressing like a Greyhound: priceless.
