Northland Summer Destination: Shipwreck tour leads kayaking novices

On this 3-mile paddle, you’ll learn about the last voyage of the Fedora while paddling over the wreckage that lies just beneath the surface. Eagles, cormorants, kingfishers, loons, blue herons, otters, beavers and a resident woodchuck family may accompany your outing.

What you’ll see: On this 3-mile paddle, you’ll learn about the last voyage of the Fedora while paddling over the wreckage that lies just beneath the surface. You’ll also paddle over and near the wrecks of the tugboat Ottawa and the Coffinberry as you cruise the pristine shoreline and red cliffs of Buffalo and Schooner bays. Eagles, cormorants, kingfishers, loons, blue herons, otters, beavers and a resident woodchuck family may accompany your outing.

Directions: Take U.S. Highway 2 east to Wisconsin Highway 13; follow Highway 13 into Red Cliff. Living Adventure will be on the lake side of the highway.

Hours: Morning trips are 8:45 a.m. to noon and afternoon trips are 1:30-4:45 p.m.

Cost: $59 plus tax. Cost includes all instruction and gear.

What’s unique: This guided half-day trip connects you with the past and is geared for first-time paddlers. But those with previous experience also will enjoy the beauty and exhilaration of this tour. The adventure begins with introductory paddling instruction and an overview of sea kayaking.
