Hermantown Girl Scouts help out Animal AlliesGirl Scouts in Hermantown collected more than 1,500 items for the Duluth animal shelter.
Junior Girl Scout Troop No. 4033 from Hermantown Middle School, a member of the Minnesota Wisconsin Lakes and Pines Girl Scout Council, collected 360 pounds of supplies (nearly 1,525 items) for Animal Allies.
The supply drive was conducted by putting out collection boxes at a number of local businesses and churches.
Collection boxes were placed at the following businesses: Cub Foods, Miller Hill Chrysler Jeep Subaru, Republic Bank's West Duluth location, Woodland Hair and Hermantown General Store. The supply drive was the troop's Bronze Award project.
In addition to the pet food, squeaky toys and office supplies, the troop also collected $65 in gift cards.
The girls also participated in Operation Happy Sock by making 68 happy socks for the cats in the animal shelter. "Happy socks" are sock pillows filled with catnip that help comfort cats while they wait to find a new home.
