A New Club Emerges
Philosophy ClubBy: Mitch Bradt, East High School
East High School is home to a variety of clubs, but a new kind of organization is forming on the campus, offering a different kind of activity, namely, philosophy.
The idea for the club was created when a group of East students were having a discussion about the universe imploding on itself. After realizing how fun it was to talk about these kinds of things, two of the students, juniors Ian Malakar and Taylor Paddock, decided it would be a good idea to start a philosophy club.
“We want the club to provide a venue to talk about important things, develop our own personal beliefs, and learn about others’ beliefs”, said junior Evan Rollo. “We also want to promote face-to-face conversational skills.”
The club currently has about ten members, and is trying to get that number up to about 30.
“We want a good mix of people”, said Rollo. “If we have a lot of people, we could break up into smaller conversations.”
The club will meet once or twice a week, and the founders are trying to get Mr. Jones as a supervisor.
“It won’t be very high strung”, said Rollo.
A broad variety of topics are on the table for discussions, ranging from government and religion to “stupid hypothetical situations.”
“We’ll just talk about anything that could provoke interesting conversation,” said Rollo.
Many clubs come and go, but with its focus on participation and having a good time, this one is sure to stick around.
