The members of Progressive Action of northeast Minnesota and northwest Wisconsin have elected Claire Kirch to the group's steering committee.
Kirch has served on the boards of the Duluth Women’s Coalition, Duluth Art Institute, Whole Foods Co-op and Lake Superior Writers. A veteran book publicist, Claire covers the Midwest for a book publishing industry magazine. She has lent her professional talents to community efforts as well, including the group working against Duluth’s “mall sprawl” referendum in 1996 and in 2002 to the artists who created the Clayton-Jackson-McGhie memorial.
“We feel fortunate to have someone with Claire Kirch’s experience in communication and publishing on the Progressive Action steering committee,” Progressive Action President Barb Olsen said in a statement. “Especially as we look toward the Duluth City Council election season this fall, when we plan to host our usual candidate forums as a way to help the community better judge the candidate choices.”
Progressive Action hosts candidate forums, holds voter training sessions on issues such as how precinct caucuses work and supports progressive candidates for local office. Its annual progressive political rally and dinner will be held April 17 at Peace Church in Duluth.
Progressive Action is a group of volunteers formed after the death of Minnesota Senator Paul Wellstone to continue his work on issues such as affordable housing, living wages and electing progressives to local office. For more information, see www.prog-action.org.
