Discover Duluth Redux: Brighton Beach

On Brighton Beach (located within Kitchi Gammi Park), it all but feels like you’re on the North Shore — yet you’re only a stone’s throw (so to speak) from all the lush city life Duluth has to offer.

Only in Duluth is it possible to have it both ways.

On Brighton Beach (located within Kitchi Gammi Park), it all but feels like you’re on the North Shore — yet you’re only a stone’s throw (so to speak) from all the lush city life Duluth has to offer.

More than that, though, the park — which is the unofficial starting point of the North Shore — is just a really, really relaxing place to go.

Brighton Beach sits in stark contrast to Duluth’s most popular beach (Park Point’s long stretches), as it’s a whole lot rockier and decidedly less inviting to the casual wader.

City Gardener Tom Kasper, who’s working on a book with Nancy Nelson on the history of the city’s parks, said that Kitchi Gammi was at one point a campground.

He said cabins built in the ’30s (around the same time the park’s fireplace structure was built) could be rented out.

“Discover Duluth” is an ongoing photo essay series by Matthew R. Perrine that highlights points of interest in and around the region.
