Woman of the Year to be named at Port Cities Luncheon
Submitted by Gloria Brunette
The annual Port Cities Luncheon will begin at noon Wednesday at the Radisson Hotel Duluth.
The Port Cities Luncheon, previously known as the Duluth Day Luncheon, has been an annual event of the women in our area since its organization in 1925.
The first Woman of the Year was named in 1948. This became a tradition and remains an exciting part of each luncheon. The purpose of the luncheon is to recognize and honor female volunteers from the Port Cities area and to select a “Woman of the Year” from those nominated by the various organizations that support the function. This marks the 66th year the Woman of the Year award has been given to a woman who has contributed generously to her community through her volunteerism.
The occasion provides an opportunity to become better acquainted with our neighbors and promotes friendship and fellowship among women of the Port Cities area.
Riki McManus, director of the Upper Midwest Film Office, will be the guest speaker. Her talk will be on “Bringing Hollywood to your Community.” McManus has cast more than 16 feature films, movies of the week and television series, including movies that were filmed in part in our area, such as “Iron Will,” “Far North” and “North Country,” as well as hundreds of commercials.
The 2014 nominees and sponsoring organization are: Nancy Minahan, Douglas County Historical Society; Nancy Odden, Duluth Woman’s Club; Judy Rogers, Altrusa International Club of Duluth; Rita Rosenberger, Junior League of Duluth; Lou Anne Siefert, Duluth branch of the American Association of Women; and Mary M. Wright, St. Luke’s Volunteer Guild. Eight students from area high schools also will be recognized for their volunteer service.
Tickets to the luncheon are $18. For reservations, call Jean at (218) 724-6372 or Elva at (218) 624-7629.
