Wisconsin man seriously injured after being hit by boat in Bayfield County

A 58-year-old man from southern Wisconsin suffered serious injuries after being struck by a boat Thursday on a Bayfield County lake.

The Bayfield County Sheriff’s Office reported Friday that it received a call at about 3:15 p.m. Thursday about a boating accident on Upper Eau Claire Lake in the town of Barnes.

Authorities reported that Thomas Wincek of Fond du Lac, Wis., his son and grandson had left a boat landing and were traveling at cruising speed when Wincek, who was operating the boat, lost control of the vessel. The boat made a quick, sharp turn, and Wincek and his son were ejected from the boat; the grandson remained in the boat as it traveled in circles.

Wincek was struck by the boat, and suffered severe lacerations from the propeller, the sheriff’s office reported. He was the only person injured.

The grandson eventually was able to reach the ignition and turn the motor off.

Wincek was transported to Hayward Area Memorial Hospital by Barnes Ambulance, then airlifted to a Duluth hospital.
