VILJO VICTOR GRONDAHL

Viljo Victor Grondahl, 98, of Morgan Park, passed away Monday, March 17, 2014 at Essentia Health (St. Marys).

Viljo was born in Isabella, Minn. to Victor A. and Fiina (Stinbecka) Grondahl. He graduated from Two Harbors High School in 1934. Viljo married his high school sweetheart Dorothy Croke on April 29, 1938 and they were together for over 70 years. The couple moved to Duluth in 1941. Viljo was a leader in the Civilian Conservation Corp. as well as a leader at Butler Brothers Riverside Shipyard. He later retired after 40 years as an engineer from Burlington Northern R.R. formerly the Northern Pacific R.R. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers, Morgan Park Senior Center, Knights of Kaliva, and volunteer driver of Meals on Wheels.

He is preceded in death by his wife Dorothy; 2 sisters, Mayme and Leila; and brother Erick.

Viljo is survived by his children, Jim (Pat) of Inver Grove Heights, Bill (Sandy) of Duluth, Mary Lou (Gary) Anderson of Hermantown; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren as well as extended family members and friends.

GATHERING OF FAMILY AND FRIENDS: 2 until the 3 p.m. memorial service Saturday, April 26, in Cremation Society of Minnesota, 4100 Grand Ave., Duluth. A reception will follow the service. Cremation Society of Minnesota, (218) 624-5200.
