Two children injured in rollover crash on Iron Range; charges pending against driver
Two young children riding in a vehicle without child safety seats were injured in a rollover crash on the Iron Range on Saturday, and charges are pending against the driver.
The St. Louis County Sheriff's Office reported that a 35-year-old Aurora woman was driving a Jeep Grand Cherokee on Trigstad Road near Lane 50, about 5 miles south of Aurora, just after 5 p.m. when she lost control of the vehicle. Authorities said she apparently was trying to light a cigarette when the crash occurred. There were two passengers in the SUV - a 1-year-old girl and a 4-year-old boy, both from Eveleth.
All three were transported to Essentia Health-Northern Pines hospital in Aurora. The 4-year-old boy was airlifted to Essentia Health-St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth; the sheriff's office did not have information on the extent of his injuries.
The driver and the 1-year-old girl suffered non-life-threatening injuries, authorities said.
Officials reported that there were no child safety seats in the vehicle at the time of the crash, which remains under investigation.
