Thomas Edward (Ed) Simmons, 93, of Duluth, formerly of Lakeview Drive and Chateau du Lac, London Rd., passed away Thursday, March 20, 2014, at Edgewood Vista.

He was born Nov. 23, 1920, in Columbia, Miss., to Charlie and Rosa Simmons.

He graduated from Mississippi State in 1942 with a degree in electrical engineering.

Ed enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1942 and served in the South Pacific. He married Patricia Rae Cerveny in Racine, Wis., on Dec. 24, 1944. After leaving the Navy in 1945, Ed and Patricia moved to Duluth, where he was employed at Minnesota Power until his retirement in 1985.

After retirement, Ed and Pat travelled overseas often to visit their daughter in Switzerland, and spent many winters in Honolulu, Hawaii. They also resided in Colorado Springs, Colo., for several years, before returning to Duluth in the late 1990s.

Ed was an active member at Long View Tennis Club and played in many tennis tournaments, winning several singles, doubles and senior vets titles over the years. He was a member of Glen Avon Presbyterian Church in Duluth, and served as a Deacon. Ed is remembered as a courtly and charming southern gentleman.

He was preceded in death by his wife Patricia; parents Charlie and Rosa; brothers Stanley, Wallace and Charles (Red), all of Mississippi; and his sister Irene Ulmer of Athens, Georgia.

Edward is survived by his three children, Franklin Dale (Janet) of Duluth, Rebecca Schob (Jurgen Rommerskirchen) of Grabs, Switzerland, Thomas Bruce of North Carolina; two grandsons, Ted Simmons, St. Paul, and Christopher Schob, Buchs, Switzerland; and his brother-in-law Curtis Ulmer of Bogart, Georgia.

MEMORIAL SERVICE: will be held in June.
