Suspect dies after high-speed chase in Bemidji
BEMIDJI, Minn. -- A high-speed pursuit through Bemidji on Monday ended in a fatality.
A preliminary investigation showed, that after the suspect stopped, law enforcement officers shouted at the suspect to exit the vehicle and a gunshot was heard, according to a press release issued by the Minnesota Department of Public Safety. The initial indication is that no officers fired their weapons.
The driver, who was alone, was found with a single gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Law enforcement had been attempting to locate the driver in relation to a chase in Beltrami County on Friday, the release stated. The individual was pursued in relation to driving after license cancellation.
Monday’s chase started about 2 p.m., reaching speeds of 100 mph along U.S. Highway 2. Law enforcement deployed spike strips on Highway 2 which the suspect hit. He then headed west on Division Street in Bemidji and stopped at the intersection of Division Street and Hidden Trail Court.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating the case.
