Silverback Colony celebrates debut album
This all started as a come-one, come-all fun-time band.
“It was completely random, literally saying to people, ‘You have a guitar in the car? Come bring it into the club,’” he said.
And that is how Silverback Colony’s roster became practically femur-length. The alt-country band — whittled down to Douglas, Kyle Keegan, Nick Case and D.J. House for this sesh — plays after midnight at V.I.P as part of Homegrown Music Festival’s Superior Night.
The festival features more than 200 bands playing at about two dozen venues in the Twin Ports through Sunday.
Back in 2011-12, when the Monday night jam was at its peak, Silverback Colony would play a mix of fan faves and an ever-growing list of originals — including stuff performed by The 4onthefloor, the more popular band Douglas fronts and the one that has made it possible for him to quit his day job.
These songs have recently been gathered and recorded for Silverback Colony’s debut album “Sounds like Silverback Colony: A North Shore Soundtrack.” The album release show is Saturday at Harriet Brewing in Minneapolis, but Douglas said there will be a show in Duluth — probably on a Monday, just like the good old days.
“It’s a lot of alt-country with instrumental segues that tie the record together,” Douglas said. “That’s something that we do live. We definitely do a lot of jam-outs on different songs.
“I wanted the record to experience that.”
Expect to hear originals and maybe some covers of songs by Ryan Adams, Wilco, Neil Young, The Band and more when the band plays today.
“It started as a for-fun alt-country, hoedown, back porch band,” Douglas said. “We’d like to keep that vibe going.”
