Silver Bay's Rocky Taconite turns 50

Rocky Taconite

Yo, Adrian … you’re thinking of a different Rocky.

Rocky Taconite is the statue found at the entrance to Silver Bay and represents the birthplace of taconite production.

To mark the occasion, the mayor of Silver Bay, JoAnne Johnson, is inviting one and all to gather at the statue for a rousing chorus of that song people tend to sing on birthdays.

The festivities begin at 5 p.m. Saturday with a massive group photo of all residents and former residents of Silver Bay.

Rocky was born to sit atop a 7-foot-tall piece of taconite. Originally installed downtown, the statue later was moved to Outer Drive, near Highway 61.

“He’s part of our city’s history. Rocky will always be there. He used to be the place where everyone would meet. We’re trying to keep that alive,” Johnson said.
