Road trip: Two weekends of art, music in Grand Marais

For the next 10 days, Grand Marais will be the site of a series of art and music festivals including Unplugged XIII and Radio Waves in addition to Plein Air.

Sixty artists are expected to participate in the annual outdoor painting competition that begins Friday. The painters will re-create the natural vistas seen throughout Cook County. Then, on Sept. 11, the artists will gather on Artists Point in Grand Marais Harbor for a 90-minute paint-a-thon that includes a shotgun start.

Radio Waves is an annual music festival that runs Friday through Sunday at Sweethearts Bluff. Musicians include Rich Mattson & The North Stars, Sam Miltich & the Clearwater Hot Club and Portage.

Unplugged XIII is a four-day event that starts Sept. 11 and will include a live concert recorded for Mountain Stage Radio Show.  Musicians include Dan Wilson and Pert Near Sandstone.
