Richard "Dick" Synhorst, 85, of Duluth, formerly of Grand Rapids, Minn., died Saturday July 12, 2014.

Dick was born March 26, 1929 in Crow Wing County near Brainerd to Richard and Garna Synhorst.

Dick graduated from Brainerd High School in 1946. He attended Brainerd Junior College and the University of Minnesota.

He was a member of the National Guard. When the guard was activated in 1951 he served in the Army. After his discharge, he was employed by the Minnesota Department of Transportation as a Senior Technician specializing in construction bridge inspection.

In 1956, he married Geraldine Benham, in Park Rapids, Minn. After one year in International Falls, Minn., they moved to Grand Rapids, Minn., where they lived for 57 years.

Dick was a member of the Future Farmers of America and 4H as a youth. As an adult he was active with the Boy Scouts of America for 50 years including local scout master, district commissioner and received both the Silver Scout and Silver Beaver Awards. As a member of the Grand Rapids United Methodist Church, he was very involved with numerous church activities. He was a member of Kiwanis, Garden Club, Minnesota Forestry Association, served on the Harris Township Board, volunteered at Grand Village, Grace House and Community Caf.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Garna Cain.

He is survived by his wife Geraldine of 58 years; three children Steve of Fargo, N.D., Kathy (Brad) Quam, of Burnsville, Minn., Patty (Tom) Miller, of Hermantown, Minn., and grandchildren Michelle (Matt) Sagedahl, Dain Synhorst, Taylor Quam, and Madelyn and Matt Miller. He is also survived by his foreign exchange daughter from 1980, Claire Tierney (and family) of Tasmania, Australia.

VISITATION: 1 p.m. until the 2 p.m. memorial service on Sunday, July 20, 2014 in the Grand Rapids United Methodist Church.
