Grandma's Chocolate Drop Cookies

½ cup shortening

1 cup brown sugar

½ cup sour milk*

1 well-beaten egg

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

½ teaspoon baking soda

2 cups all-purpose flour

¼ teaspoon salt

6 tablespoons cocoa

½ cup chopped walnuts

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Cream shortening and sugar together. Add milk, egg and vanilla; mix well. Combine dry ingredients and mix into batter. Stir in nuts. Drop by teaspoons on greased cookie sheets. Bake for 12 minutes, or until set.

*Cook's note: To make sour milk: put a few drops of lemon juice in a ½ cup measuring cup; fill with fresh milk.

Yield: About 4 dozen.

Wendy's Famous Chocolate Chip Cookies

1 cup butter

1½ cups brown sugar

2 eggs

1 teaspoon vanilla

2½ cups all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon baking soda

1 teaspoon water

2 cups chocolate chips

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees.

Cream together butter and brown sugar with a mixer until fluffy (that's one secret to chewy cookies). Add the eggs and vanilla. Mix together. Add the flour, mixing after each addition. Mix together the baking soda and water, then add to dough and mix. Add the chocolate chips and mix by hand. Spoon onto a baking sheet and bake for 12-13 minutes or until golden brown.
