Reader's view: Christianity helped shape Founding Fathers’ thinking
Duluth Minnesota 424 W. First St. 55802

The writer of a July 23 letter, “U.S. wasn’t founded as a Christian nation,” stated, “Most of our Founding Fathers were not Christians, but deists.” However, according to “The American Patriots Bible,” a book edited by Richard Lee (americanpatriots

From the First Charter in 1607 to the signing of the Constitution in 1787, a predominant Christian consensus prevailed in Colonial America, shaping our Founders’ thinking and the writing of our nation’s documents and laws. The Constitutional Convention delegates searched for a common understanding of law, government, social order and morality. They found a common acceptance in a system originating in the Holy Bible, known as the Judeo-

Christian ethic.

Perhaps the least religious, Ben Franklin, addressed the convention, asking for “prayers imploring the assistance of heaven” prior to deliberations. He quoted a verse in Psalms, “Except the Lord builds the house; they labor in vain that build it.”

A Christian foundation is evidenced in our nation’s Capital. Christian phrases and images adorn buildings and monuments, including “In God We Trust” inscribed in the House and Senate chambers and the image of Moses with the Ten Commandments in the Supreme Court. In Thomas Jefferson’s memorial, his words are written, “God who gave us life gave us liberty. Can the liberties of a nature be secure when we have removed a conviction that those liberties are the gift of God? Indeed I tremble for my country when I reflect God is just, that His justice can’t sleep forever.” Jefferson’s words are a warning: Removing God of the Bible from this country will destroy it.

Since 1947, our nation’s courts have silenced religion in public places. Our Judeo-

Christian foundation has been damaged, and our values have eroded. Wake up, America. Heed the words of Jefferson. Repent!
