Hermantown pitcher Kylie Hoff survived a near meltdown versus Esko in the first game to toss a three-hit shutout against International Falls in the second game Thursday and keep the Hawks unbeaten in the Section 7AA high school softball playoffs at Portage Park in Cohasset.

Despite allowing four runs in the top of the seventh inning, Hermantown (17-5) hung on to beat Esko 6-5 in its first game of the double-elimination tournament and then advanced to Tuesday’s winner’s bracket final with a 6-0 whitewash of the Broncos.

Jordyn Thomas and Jillayne Gilbert each drove in two runs for the Hawks, who face section newcomer Pequot Lakes at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Cloquet’s Braun Park.

Pequot Lakes 8, Cloquet 6 The Patriots rallied from a 6-3 deficit by scoring five runs in the sixth inning to knock off the host Lumberjacks.

Kayla and Barbara Miller drove in two runs apiece to lead the comeback against Cloquet pitcher Chandler Beaupre, who was in her first day back since a foot injury.

Cloquet earlier downed Virginia 9-1 as Beaupre tossed a four-hitter and struck out seven.

Cherry 15, Greenway 2 Joely Roberts was 3-for-4, including hitting a pair of doubles, and drove in five runs as the Tigers rolled to the five-inning Section 7A playoff win over the Raiders at Braun Park in Cloquet.

Logan Anderson also hit two doubles and drove in two runs as Cherry (20-3) advanced to next week’s winner’s bracket final against Littlefork-Big Falls.

Kacey Herring, who struck out six vs. Greenway, had 11 strikeouts in a two-hit, 7-0 shutout over Nashwauk-Keewatin earlier in the day.

Carlton 10, Ely 1 Grace Macor started the Bulldogs’ day off on the right foot with a 14-strikeout, no-walk performance in a 7A game against the Timberwolves.

Macor and her teammates found the going rougher in a 13-8 loss to Littlefork-Big Falls. Brianna Walton had four hits and Hannah Benson drove in three runs for Carlton (15-2) in the defeat.

BASEBALL Duluth East 3, Elk River 2 The Greyhounds strengthened their chances at a top-four seed for the Section 7AAA playoffs by rallying past the visiting Elks.
