A fire that destroyed an ice rink warming house in Iron River has been declared an arson after three boys admitted to police that they started the fire, the Iron River Police Department reported Monday. The fire was discovered just after 5 p.m. Sunday at the rink near Iron River Elementary School on Pettingill Street.

Police Chief Scot Eisenhauer said three juveniles soon confessed to lighting the building on fire after they were identified through an anonymous tip.

“We solved the case before the fire was out,” Eisenhauer said.

The building was a total loss and was valued at $50,000. Firefighters from six departments were on the scene for four hours. Deep snow around the building made fighting the fire difficult, Eisenhauer said. One firefighter experienced smoke inhalation and fatigue.

Charges are pending and the three boys, two who are age 13 and one who is 15, are not being held. The police department will work with the Bayfield County Human Services Department for any further action, Eisenhauer said.
