Phillip J. White, 79, of Carlton, passed away Thursday, July 24, 2014, at Solvay Hospice House in Duluth, surrounded by his family.

He was born the seventh son of James and Bertha (Gadola) White on Jan. 24, 1935. Phil was united in marriage to Marilyn Peterson on Sept. 18, 1953 in Minneapolis, Minn. Phil worked for Rohr Aircraft in Chula Vista, Calif., Beloit Iron Works in Beloit, Wis., and then moved to Cloquet in 1960 as a project engineer for the Northwest Paper Co. Potlatch division for 35 years and retired in 1995. He had been a longtime member of Zion Lutheran Church and served on the church council. Phil had served on the Loan Review Board for Members Co-op Credit Union and on the Cloquet City Planning Commission, was active with the Boy Scouts of America, and was a member of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church in Esko. Phil's favorite saying, and his wish for all of you, was: "Have a better than average day!"

Phil was preceded in death by his parents, and four brothers, Thomas, Mark, William and Robert White.

He is survived by his wife Marilyn; son Christopher White; daughter Laurie (Paul) Johnson; grandsons Andrew (Shauna) Johnson, Michael (Kristen) Johnson, and Peter (Nicole) Johnson; great-grandchildren Ann Marie, Lauryn, Egan, Owen, Addison and Angelina; brothers John (Gladys) White and Pat (Lois) White; sister Mary Japel; numerous nieces and nephews; and the family dog, Buzz.

VISITATION: 10 a.m. until the 11:00 a.m. funeral service Wednesday, July 30, 2014, at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church in Esko, followed by a luncheon in the Family Life Center. Interment service will be at the Oakwood Cemetery in Mora, Minn., at approximately 3:30 p.m. Memorials are preferred to the Solvay Hospice House in Duluth.
