Northland schools, universities canceling classes because of cold conditions

The Duluth school district, the University of Minnesota Duluth, the College of St. Scholastica and Lake Superior College have canceled classes for Monday, Jan. 27, because of the forecast bitterly cold conditions.

Other districts that have canceled classes as of 8 p.m. include Cloquet, Hibbing, Virginia, Proctor, Carlton and Moose Lake. The University of Wisconsin-Superior has canceled classes for Monday but the campus will remains open; Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College will be closed Monday.

A wind chill warning is in effect for the Northland from midnight tonight through noon Tuesday, for the possibility of wind chills as low as 60 below. Air temperatures are forecast to fall into the 20s and 30s below zero tonight and Monday night; highs on Monday may reach only the teens below zero.

A winter weather advisory is in effect for the region this evening because of blowing snow that will make travel hazardous at times.
