NORMAN EDWARD JOHNSON

Norman Edward Johnson, 87, of Duluth, died on Monday, April 14, 2014 with his family surrounding him.

He was born on April 8, 1927 in Tower, Minn., to Arthur and Edith (Jofs) Johnson.

Norman graduated from Eveleth High School, served in the U.S. Army 1945-47, following his basic training he went to South Korea. He returned from his duties with the Army and graduated from the University of Minnesota School of Engineering, he worked for DM&IR Railroad from 1951-63 and with Minnesota Power from 1963-84, until his retirement.

Norman was a 50 year member of the Lakeside Masonic Lodge, the Scottish Rite Valley of Duluth, American Society of Civil Engineers and served as its president 1975-76; on the board of directors for Goodwill 1978-86 and served as its vice president in 1983 and president in 1984. He was a member of the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd church for 57 years. Norman offered his talents and knowledge to the church for a new addition and helped in many other ways through the years. He was instrumental in arranging for Bell Ringers for the Salvation Army for numerous years.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Leonard and Roger Johnson.

Norman married Claudia Swor in 1956 and they had three daughters, Elizabeth (Michael) Manners of Coon Rapids, Minn., Rebecca (Bruce) Anderson of Duluth, Laurie (Jim) Whitlinger of Duluth; grandchildren, Zachery (Jill) and Lucas Manners, Christopher and Nathan Anderson, Lindsey, Maria and Jamie Whitlinger; two great grandchildren, Taylah and Leyton Manners; his brother, Gordon Johnson of Duluth.

VISITATION: 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, April 17, 2014 in the Dougherty Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation will continue from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m Funeral Service Friday, April 18, 2014 in Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd.

Military honors accorded by the Duluth Honor Guard. Interment will be at Park Hill Cemetery.
