More than 150 people gather for the ceremonial groundbreaking Tuesday afternoon of the new Maurices headquarters to be built along Superior Street between Fourth and Fifth avenues west in downtown Duluth. Maurices, whose growing staff has outgrown its spaces in several downtown buildings, will occupy six floors. A public parking ramp will take up four floors while the first floor will house Maurices' lobby and a few other businesses. Demolition of the current structures on the site will be completed in a few weeks with construction of the $70 million, 11-story structure starting in mid-July with targeted completion in spring 2016. The project ensures that Maurices, which started downtown more than 80 years ago and has grown to a women’s clothing chain of 900 stores, is staying in Duluth.  “We are so proud to be building our new headquarters in downtown Duluth where we’ve been since 1931,” Maurices President George Goldfarb said. Gov. Mark Dayton, who also attended, praised the company, saying “It’s incredibly fortunate to have businesses like Maurices willing to stay and invest in Duluth.” (Bob King / rking@duluthnews.com)
