Margaret E. Nikstad, 92, of Carlton and formerly of Foxboro, Wis., passed away Thursday, July 31, 2014 at Community Memorial Hospital in Cloquet.

She was born Nov. 25, 1921 in Clear Creek Township of Carlton County to Homer and Anna (Oltmanns) McCuskey.

Margaret enlisted with the U.S. Army Air Corps and graduated from basic training on D-Day. She served during World War II and was assigned to Tinker Field, Okla. Margaret was united in marriage to Orville E. Nikstad on April 20, 1945 in Carlton. She worked for the Wisconsin DNR at Pattison Park for 12 years and retired in 1980.

Margaret was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Orville Nikstad; daughter, Barbara Obster; son, Edward Nikstad; and a brother, Albert McCuskey.

She is survived by her children, Richard (Bonnie) Nikstad, James (Emalyn) Nikstad, Jane (James) Olson, Ronald (Tracy) Nikstad, Gerald (Debbie) Nikstad, and Sandra Rutheford; brothers, Donald (Barbara) McCuskey, Harry (Carol) McCuskey; sister, Anna Strand; sister-in-law, Audrey McCuskey; daughter-in-law, Judy Nikstad; 15 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; one anxiously expected great-grandson; and numerous nieces and nephews.

VISITATION: 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 4, 2014 in Nelson Funeral Care in Cloquet. The visitation will resume on Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2014 from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. funeral service also in Nelson Funeral Care, with Military Honors presented by the Cloquet Combined Honor Guard. Luncheon will follow in the fellowship room. Interment services will be at Holyoke Cemetery. See the family online guest book at
