SIJHL names new commissioner

The Superior International Junior Hockey League on Tuesday announced Bryan Graham as its new commissioner.

The Thunder Bay native previously worked as the vice president and director of officiating of the East Coast Hockey League, as well as assistant general manager of the Thunder Bay Border Cats of the Northwoods Baseball League. A longtime hockey official, Graham also has experience as a radio broadcaster. He replaces Ron Whitehead, who served as SIJHL president and commissioner for most of the league’s 14-year history.

The league, which features the Minnesota Iron Rangers, debuted in 2001.

Ex-Spartan claims third at Pan Am Games

Former Superior High School wrestling standout Nikola Bogojevic won a bronze medal earlier this month at the Pan American Games in Mexico City.

Bogojevic, who won a state title for the Spartans in 2010, competed in the 286.5-pound class. He won his opening match 8-0 before falling to eventual gold medalist Mijain Lopez of Cuba in the semifinals. Lopez, a two-time Olympic gold medal winner, claimed his ninth Pan Am championship. Bogojevic regrouped and beat Eduardo Lopez of Puerto Rico in the bronze medal match on July 15.

Bogojevic, a student at Colorado State-Pueblo, was competing with the United States World Greco-Roman team, which won the team title with 62 points.

RUNNING

Wednesday Night at the Races resumes

Children 14 and under are invited to lace up their shoes and take part in Wednesday Night at the Races, which begins at 6 p.m. today at Duluth East High School.

The free youth races are presented by the Young Athletes Foundation and Grandma’s Marathon. Registration is from 5 to 5:50 p.m. each race days. Races are an eighth to a half mile in distance.

After today, the series continues on July 30 at Lincoln Park Middle School, Aug. 6 at Griggs Field on the Minnesota Duluth campus, Aug. 13 at the Hermantown High School track, Aug. 20 at Central Park in Superior, and Aug. 27 at Park Point, which includes an end-of-season picnic. The East, UMD and Hermantown races include a wheelchair division, with all finishers receiving a race ribbon and being entered into prize drawings.
