JOHN W. HULL SR.

John W. Hull, Sr., 88, of Duluth, died Friday, May 16, 2014, in Duluth.

John was born in Minneapolis and moved to Duluth in 1946. He eventually moved to the North Tischer Road and lived there more than 60 years until the time of his death.

John served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1946 aboard the Battleship Wyoming and the Destroyer Escort USS Eisner DE1923 in the South Pacific. He was in the U.S. Marines from 1949 to 1954 and was in the second wave landing at Inchon, South Korea. He was at the Chosin Reservoir in North Korea for two months and he served in the Coast Guard Reserve in Duluth onboard the Woodrush from 1959 to 1963.

John graduated from UMD in 1954 with a BA degree and in 1962 with a BS degree. He taught at the Askov High School from January 1961 through May of 1963 and at Albrook High School from September 1963 through May of 1986. He was a substitute teacher and tutor in the Duluth school system for two years.

John was a longtime member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Twig.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son Phillip S. Hull; a baby sister; grandson Caleb Wayne Hull.

John is survived by his wife, Jean; daughter Karen Hull of New Hope, Minn.; sons Denver of St. Paul, John Jr. (Laurie) of Midland, Mich., and Gregory (Rachelle "Shele") of Two Harbors; daughter-in-law Sara Hull of Schertz, Texas; grandchildren Eric, Rachel, Nathan, Joshua (Christen), Benjamin (Lynn), Samuel, Rebecca, Robert and Abigail; and great-grandchildren Kaylee, Grace, Ellie, Wesley and Nathanael.

VISITATION: 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, May 20, in the Dougherty Funeral Home Chapel and 10 until the 11 a.m. service Wednesday, May 21, in Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Twig.

The family requests no flowers, but if so desired, memorials may be sent to Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Twig or the Lutheran Brotherhood of Duluth. Military Honors accorded by the Duluth Honor Guard.

Interment at the Twig Cemetery in Twig.
