Iron River storm shelter gets FEMA grant

Bayfield County has been awarded at $238,112 grant to build a community storm shelter at the county fairgrounds in Iron River.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency announced the “hazard mitigation grant” today for construction of a “safe room’’ that can hold up to 500 people during an extreme weather event.

Bayfield County has experienced numerous powerful storms in recent years. This safe room would be centrally located in the fairgrounds, across from the grandstand.

FEMA will pay 75 percent of the project’s total cost. The Wisconsin Emergency Management Agency and Bayfield County each will contribute 12.5 percent of the funds, or $39,686 each, according to the announcement.
