Fargo man accused of abandoning child during shoplifting attempt
FARGO – A Fargo father is accused of bringing his 11-year-old daughter to Walmart, loading up a cart with more than $1,000 worth of goods, then abandoning the girl – but not the cart – in an effort to shoplift from the store.
Jeffrey Charles Larson, 45, was charged Wednesday in Cass County District Court with one count of theft, a Class C felony, and one count of contributing to the deprivation of a minor, a Class A misdemeanor.
A police report says Fargo police Officer Patrick Fylling responded Monday to a report of a shoplifter fleeing from Walmart.
At the scene, Fylling met Shannon Hanson, Larson’s girlfriend, who had retrieved the girl from where loss prevention officers had found her inside the store.
Hanson told the officer she had gone to Walmart to meet Larson when she saw him come out of the store pushing a cart full of items, yelling to her that the girl was still in the store.
That was when he ditched the cart and started running through the parking lot, she told Fylling.
The girl told the officer it had happened before, court documents state, so she went to the front desk to get help.
Larson’s next court appearance is set for Aug. 6.
