Ernest "Ernie" Johnson, 81, of Piedmont Heights, passed away on Monday, Aug. 11, 2014 in his home surrounded by his family.

Ernest was born on Nov. 15, 1932 to Newton and Zella Johnson near Smithland, Iowa.

He attended and graduated from Smithland High School in 1950. He enlisted in the Air Force and served during the Korean War and was stationed in Japan for two years. He then attended Augustana College and graduated from South Dakota State University in 1960. Ernie then went to work for the IRS and was a Special Agent first in St. Paul and then spent the rest of his IRS career in Duluth. After retirement he worked as a security guard at Diamond Tool until its closing.

He married his wife Mary twice, first on Nov. 3, 1957 and again on Nov. 3, 2007. He had a daughter Julie (Dan) Linden and son Paul (Jodi). Ernie enjoyed many passions in life. He was a woodworker, golfed (a hole-in-one 2007) and played in the city horse shoe league. He also bowled at Country Lanes and Skyline Lanes, belonged to the Dry Riders Motorcycle Club and loved his Harley.

He is preceded in death by his parents and one brother.

Ernie is survived by his wife Mary; children, Julie (Dan) Linden, Paul (Jodi) Johnson; five grandchildren, Ashley Khalar, Hannah Khalar, Tim (Ashley) Slinger, Haley Johnson, Molly Johnson and two great-grandchildren, Aiden and Aili. He is also survived by two sisters, Evelyn Mitchell and Elaine Echtinaw; brother Ed and numerous friends that he made on his life journey.

A special thanks to Dr. Plachta and nurse Lisa who he believed were his guardian angels for many years. Also to the hospice people of St. Lukes.
