Duluth Trading Co. will open its new 8,000-square-foot store in downtown Duluth on May 9.

The store will open at the Woodrush Building at 300 E. Superior St., occupying the entire building and employing 20 to 25 people.

It’ll be the fourth brick-and-mortar store for the popular catalog and online retailer that offers durable work and outdoor apparel and accessories for men and women. While most of its customers are men, more and more women are turning to the company for rugged work and outdoor wear.

And the company does it with humor.

There are the Longtail T-shirts that prevent “plumber’s butt,” Ballroom Jeans for “crouch without the ouch” and Asset Management Jeans.

Duluth Trading Co. started in Duluth about 25 years ago with its first headquarters on a converted barge in the Duluth harbor. When the catalog business was sold in the mid-1990s, a new call center and warehouse was established in Wisconsin.

Company officials have said they’re excited to be coming home to Duluth.

Now based in Belleville, Wis., Duluth Trading Co. started opening retail stores in 2010. It now has stores in Mount Horeb and Port Washington, Wis., and Bloomington, Minn. The company also has an outlet store in Belleville.

The Duluth store hours will be 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays.
