Authorities said a 45-year-old Duluth woman was the driver of the van that ran into the boy and his bicycle. She said she did not see him until the collision already had occurred, according to a police report. The boy apparently was crossing the street on his bicycle when he was struck. He was wearing a helmet, police spokesman Jim Hansen said.

Police reported that the driver involved showed no signs of impairment, but the incident remains under investigation.

As of Sunday evening, authorities had not released the name of the driver or the victim.
