The nighthawks have been moving lately, making their looping flights as they move south, feeding on airborne insects as they go. Look for them in the skies over the tree tops or open fields, both in and out of town. As they fly, they make a “sharp, electric peent,” according to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. Thousands have been counted in a single day over Duluth.
