Daniel Hawkin, 65 passed away in his Florida residence, on March 31, 2014 surrounded by his immediate family and friends.
He was born Aug. 28, 1948 in Dululth to Arlene Pekkala.
Dan graduated with the first class of Superior Senior High in 1966.
He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps, spring of 1966, May of 1967 served a tour in Vietnam.
Upon completing active duty, he graduated from Officers candidate School in Fort Benning, Ga. Then joined the 724th Engineer Battalion of the Wisconsin Army National Guard, serving for a period of time as Co. Commander of Headquarters Co., in Superior along with various Battalion level positions, then joining the US Army Reserve where he was Operations Officer, building schools and wells in Guatemala. His military career spanned over 40 years. He retired from the US Army Reserve in 2008 as Lt. Colonel.
He was employed by Wisconsin Bell Telephone Co., Superior Housing Authority and the City of Superior as the Code Compliance Officer. He was passionate to establish a working relationship between the City, County and Non Profit Org's., coordinated and taught classes to the cities Landlords and Tenants.
He served as President of the Duluth MDA for two years, Opened Superior's first Bed and Breakfast (Gull Wing Inn) in 1991. Direct Jobber in Amsoil for over 30 years.
Dan was an avid fisherman taking him to Alaska, Canada, Northern Wis., Minn. and in Fla. Enjoyed History, travel, woodworking and family & friends.
He was preceded in death by his mother; and grandson Eric Knickrehm 6 mo.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Elizabeth Hawkin; son, Daniel Hawkin II; daughter, Kirsten Knickrehm; three grandchildren, Daniel Hawkin III, Aaron Knickrehm, Mariah Annear; and brothers John and Greg Pekkala.
