County Board OKs change in election rotation

The St. Louis County Board approved a change to its election rotation Tuesday.

The 7th District seat will be just a two-year term following the election this fall. It will return to the standard four-year term for subsequent elections.

The seat covers the southwestern quarter of the county, including Floodwood and Hibbing.

Historically, the seat was up for election during opposite years as the other Iron Range seats. This was intended to provide stability and ensure institutional memory on the board so that the commissioners in those three positions couldn’t all retire or be defeated at the same time.

However, all three Iron Range seats have been on the same election rotation since the 2002.
