Condition of man rescued from remote Northland swamp improves
A 72-year-old man rescued from a remote swamp in northern St. Louis County last week after spending as long as two days outside was upgraded to good condition this week.
Gerald Evenson was found by neighbors last Friday off a forest road north of Orr and extracted by St. Louis County Rescue Squad personnel. He was unresponsive — bruised, dehydrated, covered in insect bites — when he was located and airlifted to Duluth. Evenson was listed in serious condition initially, then downgraded to critical condition for multiple days before improving, according to reports from Essentia Health-St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth.
Authorities said they believe Evenson had left home on his all-terrain vehicle, possibly on July 16, when he struck a stump, wrecking the ATV and throwing him from the vehicle. He then may have left the trail to try a cross-country route home before collapsing.
Neighbors noticed he had been missing an initiated the search in the remote area.
