Chisholm photo exhibit shows lives of Sami reindeer herders
National Geographic photographer Erika Larsen spent 2007-11 living with reindeer herders in Norway and Sweden. The result: exhibitions featuring large-scale photographs that link the present-day Sami people with their heritage.
“Sami Walking with Reindeer” and the companion show “The Sami Reindeer People of Alaska” tell the story of Sami people from Norway, who were brought to Alaska to teach reindeer herding.
Larsen’s photos will be available for viewing through Aug. 31 at the Minnesota Discovery Center in Chisholm. The photographer will present a gallery talk from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Minnesota Discovery Center, 1005 Discovery Drive, Chisholm.
Larsen, a Fulbright fellow, has had her work shown internationally, including in the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery. Her subjects lean toward human interest and cultural issues.
