Charges: Barnum bank robbery suspect locked keys in getaway car
It can be a hassle to lock your keys in your car. Even worse if you just robbed a bank and need to make a clean getaway.
Itabiyi, of Brooklyn Center, Minn., allegedly walked into the bank with a replica handgun and demanded money from one of the employees. After taking an unknown amount of money, authorities say Itabiyi locked his keys inside his getaway vehicle and then stole a hammer from a nearby garage to break one of the car’s windows and recover the keys.
Bank employees called police at 3:35 p.m. to report the robbery. Shortly thereafter, the Carlton County Sheriff’s Office says Itabiyi was pulled over by Moose Lake police for a traffic stop. At the time, the sheriff’s office says, the Moose Lake officer didn’t have any information that would lead him to believe the driver was involved with the bank robbery.
According to a statement from the sheriff’s office, upon closer investigation and with witness interviews and video surveillance, the suspect was identified as driving a maroon Saturn, the same vehicle that initially was pulled over by Moose Lake police.
Pine County deputies ultimately found the vehicle on Interstate 35 and detained Itabiyi until Carlton County deputies arrived and brought him to the Carlton County Jail, where he was interviewed by the sheriff’s office and FBI agents.
Authorities say Itabiyi admitted to robbing the bank and stuffing the money into a peach-colored pillow case.
After executing a search warrant of the vehicle, investigators discovered the replica handgun, the peach pillow case with banknotes and the hammer taken from a Barnum resident’s garage.
Itabiyi was in custody at the Carlton County Jail on Friday. held on $30,000 bond or $3,000 cash bail.
