* Work is progressing on a 12-acre site at the Village Mall, off Miller Trunk Highway, for K Mart, a national discount operation. K Mart will build an 84,000-square-foot department store, a 22,000-square-foot supermarket, and a parking lot for 1,000 cars.

* Three mute swans touched down briefly in Duluth yesterday for perhaps the first reported sighting of such birds in Minnesota. The mutes, accompanied by a whistling swan, were seen in a cove near 3110 London Road.

* Because of funding cutbacks, little work is planned on Minnesota Highway 61 this summer. Only $2.9 million was available for Northeastern Minnesota this construction season compared to an average of $40 million to $60 million annually for the past 10 years.

* The 163-member Hibbing High School Bluejacket Marching Band will leave for Hawaii on June 9 to compete in the King Kamehameha Music Festival. Hibbing is one of only eight bands from outside Hawaii invited to the festival.
