* A bill that would have opened the way for liquor sales in Duluth’s Lakeside neighborhood was rejected yesterday by the Minnesota Senate. The bill authorized city councils in Minneapolis, St. Paul and Duluth to disregard any city ordinances restricting issuance of liquor licenses.

* Greater tax support for extracurricular activities in the schools was urged on the Duluth School Board yesterday by the Duluth Intracity Student Council. The students said schools now raise most of the money for these activities by holding fund drives.

* About 125 area Lutherans met in Cloquet yesterday for a discussion of the Evangelical Lutheran Church’s new draft statement on human sexuality. The draft offers alternative interpretations of the traditional view of the church toward homosexuality.

* More than 200 young people crowded into the Superior Council chambers yesterday to let councilors know they need their own hangout — a youth center for teens, designed by teens. The youths told the council teens need a place to hold events.
