* A trial began in U.S. District Court in Duluth yesterday in the suit of 12 area ski resort operators who contend a $600,000 grant for Spirit Mountain violates federal requirements. Their attorney argued there isn’t sufficient business for another ski area.

* Tony Gross pitched a four-hit shutout yesterday to lead his Eastern All-Stars to a 6-0 victory over the Suburban All-Stars for the city district Babe Ruth baseball championship at Wade Stadium. Eastern’s win was their second straight in the best-of-three series.

* The news that National Steel is reopening its Keewatin taconite plant was greeted with applause on the Iron Range yesterday. More than 100 people, many of them miners and their families, attended an afternoon news conference at the plant.

* A study by the National Association of Home Builders lists Duluth as the 15th-most-affordable housing market in the U.S. The study calculates affordability based on existing interest rates, the area’s median household income, and the median sale price of homes.
