* In a letter to President Nixon yesterday, Duluth industrialist Jeno Paulucci asked that western Lake Superior be declared a disaster area and clean drinking water be immediately provided. Paulucci called Reserve Mining Co.’s dumping of taconite tailings into the lake “a man-made disaster.”

* The United Northern Sportsmen’s Smelt Fry tent went up yesterday at the end of Park Point to start the 25th annual event. Smelt dinners at $1.50 are served from noon until midnight during the smelt run.

* Bruce McLeod, athletic director at UMD, gained one of the most influential positions in college hockey yesterday when he was named commissioner of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association. McLeod will remain UMD’s athletic director, a position he’s held for 10 years.

* The Northern Ale Stars, a local group of amateur brewers, will host its fifth annual Beer Tasting Party tomorrow night in the August Fitger Room in the Fitger’s Brewery Complex. The event will feature two home brews and numerous other regional beers.
