* Demand for coke produced in Duluth will increase under a stepped-up steel-making program announced by U.S. Steel Corp. The Duluth plant, which employs 250 men, makes coke that is shipped to U.S. Steel’s Chicago district.

* Smelt have been running heavily on Park Point for the last few days but less so along the North Shore. Herb Johnson, manager of the French River fish hatchery, said yesterday the peak of the run should be this weekend.

* About 30 Duluth softball players, umpires and managers met with city councilors last evening to discuss a change in their governing body. Last fall, the city switched its softball affiliation from the Minnesota Sports Federation to the Minnesota Recreation and Park Association.

* Officials from a new Great Lakes cruise business visited Duluth yesterday to scout for places to dock their 383-foot passenger ship this summer. Marine Expeditions Inc. plans to have a vessel in the Duluth harbor Aug. 9 to take on passengers.
