* Members of the executive committee of the Western Lake Superior Sanitary District were advised yesterday that problems with water infiltrating Duluth’s sanitary sewer system are not as serious as previously thought. The study was completed by American Consulting Services of St. Paul.

* Deidre Dodge, an employee of the Minnesota Montessori Foundation, yesterday announced her intention to run for St. Louis County commissioner from the 2nd District. The post will be vacated this year with the retirement of Joseph Priley.

* Lawrence Ianni, the often-controversial chancellor of the University of Minnesota-Duluth, said yesterday he will retire from his post at the end of the next school year. Ianni came to UMD in 1987 from San Francisco State University.

* City of Duluth officials are fighting the problem of illegal trash dumping by posting signs, providing free garbage pick-up days and cleaning problem areas as soon as they’re discovered. They are even considering installing video surveillance cameras in problem areas like Skyline Parkway.
